Gypsum sculptures – history
The history of sculptural compositions and individual gypsum busts goes back to antiquity. For millennia, people have furnished their homes with fragments of decorative stucco – now archaeologists find bizarre statues in the Egyptian pyramids, ancient Roman and ancient Greek buildings. The fashion for decorating spaces did not bypass Russia either – gypsum sculptures as part of the interior appeared in the country as early as the twelfth century. They served as decoration for the royal chambers and boyar estates.
The versatility of stucco decoration explains its popularity in modern times. Laconic compositions can beautify a building of any style – from classical (Empire, Baroque, Rococo) to modern (high-tech, Art Deco). Whole sculptures, small busts emphasize the refined taste of the owner of the house and also express his originality and creative approach. The designers of our stucco factory are ready to develop a unique project for your mansion, apartment, so that the space sparkles with bright colors and stands out against the background of other rooms! We can decorate rooms in the same style or think about organic inclusions of classics in a modern interior.
Why are gypsum sculptures needed?
The scope of application of monuments made of high-quality gypsum is very wide:
Transformation of the exterior of a country house. Your house will stand out well among the surrounding buildings if you install a group of sculptures at the entrance. Or order columns in the form of Atlanteans that support the balcony and protruding parts of the upper floors. Connoisseurs of laconic landscape design will enjoy garden sculptures, fountains, small architectural forms, small antique figures on the sides of the main entrance.
Interior decoration of an apartment or a private house. Sculptural elements of gypsum are widely used in the interior decoration of buildings: the ceiling, the walls are covered with stucco, stucco panels and bas-reliefs are accentuated. This antique style will perfectly complement the statue of an ancient Greek hero. Modern suggests a bolder design – place an imaginatively decorated sculpture in the middle of the room.
Execution of a landscape design project for a suburban area. If the owner has a large area, our designers will develop an original project for you. Figures of ancient gods or heroes will be installed between openwork pavilions, flower bushes and winding paths.
What gypsum sculptures are made?
Over the years of productive work of the workshop, employees have successfully processed many orders, including unusual projects and author’s sculptural compositions. We do not limit ourselves to individual gypsum figures, but also make stucco decorations from a photo to order.
To accurately specify preferences before placing an order, the owner of the living space can familiarize himself with the types of monuments on the portfolio page. The company is engaged in the creation and sale of various types of author’s sculptures:
- Whole figures (full length, small copies (mini-sculptures) or large-scale objects). First, the mold is designed, a plastic gypsum solution is poured inside and fills the recesses. Experts install the completed composition in your suburban area, in a luxurious mansion or various non-residential buildings. Aesthetic figures are bought when decorating shopping centers, restaurants, cafes, but also for art academies and colleges. Future designers, artists, architects learn to depict living people on canvas using high-quality monuments. Educational institutions cooperate with us, because real architectural masterpieces are created in the workshop. The figures of the Atlanteans are so carefully made that every muscle of the body is visible.
- Busts or heads of famous historical figures, real people or fictional characters. Such objects of sculptural art take up much less space, allowing customers to order several portrait busts at once. A piece of gypsum depicting the shoulders with the head of a certain person is also an original gift for a good friend, family member or boss.
- Pedestals, sculptural compositions. We are not afraid to take on even extravagant orders. The portfolio of successfully completed works includes the erection of a group of monuments for decorating fountains, antique vases of larger dimensions, monuments to famous poets and writers. The craftsmen also work with the direction of ritual sculpture. We discuss the details of production with the client in advance so that the tombstone preserves the image of a deceased family member.
You should turn to the services of a sculpture workshop if even the most unusual and daring idea comes to your mind. Experts support any proposal, clarify the details, develop a project and create a real art masterpiece. Customers order from us both individual figures and entire sculptural compositions consisting of several characters and united by a common plot. Architectural art will favorably emphasize the individuality of a summer house, a spacious apartment or a garden on your site.
Characteristics of the building material
Modeled sculptural high relief, produced by “Phoenix-Group”, Moscow
Various building materials are used to transform the facade, the interior or the personal plot. But one of them was especially loved by the owners of private houses – safe and environmentally friendly gypsum. Natural stone is actively used for the manufacture of decorative articles. It does not accumulate harmful substances, does not affect health.
Designers and architects prefer to work with this material because of its plasticity. Gypsum mortar penetrates into all the recesses of the mold, which is developed after the approval of the project by the client, so that the craftsmen manage to comply exactly with the plan.
Ready-made compositions of natural stone are dazzling white, which makes it possible to further customize them. At the request of the client, technologists process construction works with durable paint or a special solution to imitate more refined stones and minerals. Employees of the company will also be able to coat products with a composition that improves performance – various external factors will not have a negative effect.
Properly prepared gypsum will be durable, last for decades and delight the owners of a private house, cottage, apartment. Sometimes during installation the integrity of the object is violated, but the gypsum surface is easy to repair with the help of construction tools.
What gypsum sculptures can be
You can decorate an office, a private home or a spacious apartment by installing the following works of art:
- Figures – more often customers order volumetric figures with Atlanteans, other mythological characters or animals. The features of the production make it possible to make both a full-fledged sculptural object with a relief visible from all sides, and a bas-relief with one protruding plane. If the scale of the room is large, the figure can be installed in a specially prepared niche – so it looks more original and attracts attention.
- Busts – usually more compact works are made in the form of the upper body of famous historical figures (writers, composers), mythological characters. Such decorations will create a semantic load of the interior or reflect the views and preferences of the owner of the building. The busts are produced with the faces of famous philosophers, musicians or poets, so the client will definitely find something suitable, close in spirit.
- Heads – in comparison with the bust, the shoulders and head of a person made of gypsum, only the head of the character will be a more concise version of the decor. Reduced variations fit perfectly with classical finishes and complement a room in Baroque, Rococo or Empire style.
- Pedestals – by the way they are made, pedestals resemble columns, but these decorative details fulfill a supporting function and act as a stand for a separate gypsum figure or an entire composition. The pedestal can have a round or square base and is decorated with fancy stucco with floral motifs or geometric patterns. Visitors to the online store of stucco molding phoenix-group.ru often order monumental foundations for placing large plants or flower pots.
By transforming your home with real works of art, you create a unique look for a cottage or apartment. Your guests will not be able to forget the design, decorated with stucco decorations, sculptures, bas-reliefs or gypsum figures.
Any design object of gypsum, the production of which took place according to all requirements and standards, will be a good gift for a connoisseur of stucco decorations. Our managers are ready to advise you on products in the price category of your preference – we can also make an author’s portrait bust in a single copy. Your friends or loved ones will remember this gift for a long time.
For which styles are gypsum sculptures suitable?
Stucco compositions on the facade, production and installation “Phoenix-Group”, Moscow
Stucco, bas-reliefs, panels and sculptural compositions of gypsum are considered a characteristic feature of the classical style. The designers of our studio know how to fit this kind of decor into the interior. We have often worked with spaces in the following styles:
- Classics – Empire, Baroque, Rococo. Mansions or houses in the classical style will look more advantageous if you think about the location of the figures of muscular Atlanteans, busts of famous philosophers or pedestals with stucco. Elements of stucco decorations emphasize the refined taste of the owners, their aesthetic views and also create a hidden semantic layer of the entire space.
- Modern trends – minimalism, hi-tech, art deco. With the help of gypsum figures, bas-reliefs, you can easily diversify the laconic interior and place semantic accents. We recommend choosing images of mythological characters or animals for these styles. To fit the elements into the overall look, you can artificially age the material or paint the object with bright colors, creating a contrast with the rest of the background. Modern style includes visual accentuation of fragments – surround the sculptures with light sources to emphasize the relief.
Some customers are not ready to install large-scale figures in their summer house or at home. Then we suggest paying attention to small busts that are suitable for your interior and placing them in all rooms. To improve the lighting, it is better to order pedestals so that the gypsum heads visually stand out in the space.
Any interior decorated with gypsum figurines, bas-reliefs becomes original and memorable. Photos of completed projects on the Phoenix Group website will help you make a choice before placing an order.
How to care for gypsum products?
Gypsum sculpture in the interior of the house, manufactured by “Phoenix Group”, Moscow
For the manufacture of stucco: monuments, panels, bas-reliefs, statues (bust, hands, heads), pedestals, we buy a high-quality brand of architectural gypsum – G16. This building material is distinguished by its plasticity, strength, resistance to the manifestation of various external factors (water, frost, heat, physical impact), which explains the durability of stucco objects. An additional advantage of natural stone is environmental friendliness – the material is not at all harmful to the health of property owners, so it can stand indoors all year round.
The material of the G16 brand is distinguished from other substances also by its ease of use – it is easy to maintain for natural stone, it retains a stylish appearance, even the dazzling whiteness of statues. Experts who have been working with different brands of gypsum for several years have developed the following recommendations for the owners of a statue or bust:
- Order additional processing of the product before installation. A chemical composition is applied to the surface of the figure, which improves the strength properties of the material. This step is especially important for those who order compositions for the garden. The statues will be used in extreme conditions, so they must be protected from aggressive environmental factors. Even if you place a small bust in the house, it should be treated – in this way you extend the life of the decor.
- Periodically clean gypsum compositions if they become dirty over time. The surface of the sculpture will become dirty, the shade will become dull and inconspicuous, so you need to buy a mild detergent (there is an instruction for it – follow it so that you do not disturb the surface).
- Order restoration of the statue if the surface is damaged and the tint layer is worn. The craftsmen will carefully restore the coating, seal defects and flaws that have arisen over the years of use, and return the varnish gloss and the desired shade to the figure.
Before ordering a gypsum sculpture, experts advise evaluating the overall appearance of the space and the temperature conditions. If you plan to install an expensive full-size composition on the street, consider the need to make an additional canopy. There will be a figure under it, so you can extend the service life and preserve an aesthetic appearance.
Artistic treatment of a gypsum sculpture
Statues for a house in a dazzling white shade will complement the classic finish well, give originality and completeness. The modern style, however, does not imply that the space is decorated with stucco elements, but provides for the manifestation of imagination. Our designers have developed several methods for the artistic processing of figures. These techniques will help to harmoniously fit decorative figures, busts, monuments into a modern interior:
- Staining with bright colors. Only particularly resistant compounds – water-based acrylic paint can be applied to the surface of the gypsum. The bust can be completely multi-colored, leaving neon spots, brightly dusted. Such an art object will complement the laconic interior.
- Plating with gilding or a solution that imitates matte bronze. Gypsum statues can be compared by their external characteristics to more expensive and refined materials – gold, bronze, porcelain, marble. For this, the products are coated with special compounds.
- Applying varnish – the tried and tested composition reflects the blinding rays of the sun, so that the torso of the Greek hero seems to glow in the sun. The lacquer can have a silicone or polyurethane base.
Making gypsum sculptures – details
We accept orders, even of a high degree of complexity – we will develop a design project based on the oral description, photos or specific examples of the client. Craftsmen can make an exact copy of a sculptural masterpiece and make an unusual and original monument.
When making figures, gypsum busts, they adhere to the following technologies, which are actively used by the leading workshops of the country:
- Direct modeling method – employees develop a project, coordinate it with the client and then proceed to form a solid framework. Then the powder is mixed with water in the right proportions, solidifies, slightly increases in volume. While the mixture is hardening, the master applies it to the frame with a tool and gives it the desired shape. When the natural stone hardens, the finishing touches are made and the monument goes on to processing. This method has been known since antiquity – with its help it will be possible to make atypical, individual statues.
- Manufacture by filling hollow castings with a solution. After approval of the project, a mold is drawn up, empty inside. To increase the strength, the structure is additionally reinforced with a metal frame. Then gypsum powder mixed with water is poured inside – after the allotted time, the figure hardens and the mold is cut and removed.
Experts confidently master all known technologies, so they will quickly determine the optimal method for manufacturing a specific order. You can contact us with any idea, even a very original one – we will be happy to discuss with you the details of its implementation!
The final stage in the manufacture of a gypsum sculpture is a protective and decorative treatment, which is carried out by applying various chemical compositions:
- Primer – the surface is covered with resistant varnishes, oil paint or drying oil, which helps to compact the gypsum particles, making them more durable. This phase is necessary if the statue is further painted in different colors – otherwise the paint simply will not stick to the material.
- Patination – decorative finishing allows you to get a high-quality imitation of other natural stones, which are distinguished by a higher price. Craftsmen use various powders (copper, bronze), oil paints on varnishes to get a matte surface with stains like marble, a glossy sheen like porcelain or a shiny look like gold, silver, copper.
- Waxing – at this stage, special brands of wax, paraffin, are used, which give the statues the ability to repel water. This phase is necessary for landscape architecture, ritual monuments in the open air.
The manufacturing technology must be fully studied by the craftsmen to prevent violations that can worsen the reliability and durability of the gypsum figure.
Advantages of gypsum as a building material
Fragments of the interior are made of the gypsum brand G16, which is popular with architects and designers. This very strong ground natural stone attracts with its properties. In the first place is the high tensile strength. Such statues and heads last a very long time and the surface of the gypsum will not be disturbed by the influence of various external factors. Thanks to this feature, the G16 brand is actively chosen in the manufacture of sculptures for landscape architecture or ritual monuments. Such works remain on the street all year round and are exposed to precipitation, temperature fluctuations.
Another distinctive quality of architectural gypsum is its plasticity. When making a statue from one or more photos, it is better to work with a mass that fills the grooves of the prepared mold. The G16 brand penetrates into all corners and the sculptor creates an original art object down to the smallest detail.
Despite their good resistance to the influence of various external factors, types of construction gypsum are easily susceptible to chemical solutions designed to improve a number of characteristics. At the request of the client, technologists will clad the manufactured monument with a special composition that increases strength and extends the life of the goods. When painting the bust, we use only durable acrylic paint. They will not crack over time and the beautiful appearance of the gypsum figure will last for a long time.
Gypsum sculptures are often bought for installation in a country house or apartment. Since this building material is made on the basis of natural stone, it does not emit harmful substances into the air, so owners do not have to worry about their health. This property makes gypsum one of the most durable building materials.
The high durability of the gypsum explains the durability of the building material – even years after manufacture, the statue will not lose its original appearance if properly cared for. In rare cases, the surface of a monument can be disturbed, but then the sculptors will easily restore its integrity in the shortest possible time. The surface is coated with a special solution, application requires strict adherence to the instructions.
The main characteristics of gypsum
In every hardware store you will find gypsum powder or gypsum plasters. The material is made from sedimentary rock – gypsum stone. Such a varied and widespread use of gypsum in construction works is due to its availability in combination with low cost. It is quite easy to work with this material. It is necessary to dilute it with water, after which you can start pouring molds or modeling. Please note: gypsum hardens very quickly in air and at the same time slightly increases in volume (no more than 1%). Prepare the solution one time, just before you start working with it. The material can convey the smallest details. If desired, gypsum sculptures can be decorated with paints and other finishing agents and create a high-quality imitation of a noble stone or metal.
Ready-made or homemade?
For the manufacture of gypsum sculptures, you can use ready-made molds. They are sold in art stores. An interesting idea is to use cooking molds for example for ice, muffins or candy. When working together with children, you can use sand molds for pouring gypsum. If you have not been able to find anything interesting, try making the mold yourself. Simple sculptures (for example, interior columns or large mushrooms for garden decoration) can be made with household devices. A mushroom cap, for example, can be cast in a bowl of a suitable size, and a stem in a cut-off plastic bottle. Casting molds can be removed from existing figurines and statuettes. Cover the selected product with household foil. Then paste it with clay or plasticine. Wait until the material has hardened, then carefully cut out the mold and remove the figurine hidden in it. Your homemade mold is ready, now you can make
Methods for making gypsum sculptures
If you are not a professional sculptor, it makes sense to get started with gypsum by making sculptures using the casting method. This technology involves the production of finished products by pouring gypsum solution into molds. Molding is a very easy way to make sculptures, which is even suitable for children’s creativity. In children under 12 years of age, creative activities should be carried out by an adult. An alternative way to make a sculpture from gypsum is to sculpt the desired shape from diluted gypsum onto the frame. It is convenient to use different spatulas and other tools during work. Which sculptures can you make yourself from gypsum? The hardened material is quite porous and fragile. But despite this, it can be used to make street sculptures. Gypsum is ideal for making interior elements and decorative figures. If you are just starting out with this material, try doing something small and simple in shape first. Gradually improving your skills, you will learn how to make real masterpieces from gypsum.
Mold preparation and gypsum casting
The mold needs special processing before going to work. Lubricate the inner walls thoroughly with petroleum jelly, vegetable oil or paraffin. Pay particular attention to the small parts of the casting. Professional sculptors often make a special mold-forming lubricant. Take 2 parts of coarsely grated soap, add 1 part of vegetable oil and 7 parts of water. Stir the ingredients until smooth. The grease is ready – you can start processing the inner surface of the mold. Do not skip this phase under any circumstances, otherwise you will not be able to pull out the final product after it has hardened. How to make a sculpture from gypsum with your own hands, how to dilute the dry mixture correctly? It is enough to mix the powder with water to the consistency of sour cream. Make sure you let the gypsum sit for a few minutes and then, after thorough mixing, start filling the mold. A small amount of PVA glue can be added to the water for the preparation of gypsum mortar – no more than 25% of the total liquid volume.
Preparation of the working solution
The working solution is very easy to prepare. The main condition is a sufficient amount of it. Since the mixture quickly changes to a solid state (literally after three minutes), you should cook it with a small margin. If there is a lot of it when pouring into the mold, the excess can be easily removed with a spatula. When the solution is not enough, problems can occur in the work, and this will affect the appearance of the figurine. To prepare liquid gypsum, you need:
- Choose a suitable container so that it is convenient to mix the contents.
- Pour 5 liters of water (the ratio is usually taken 10:7).
- For such a volume of liquid, you need to pour 3.5 liters of gypsum.
- We knead the solution with an electric construction mixer and bring it to the consistency of sour cream. It must be free of lumps and foreign particles.
The powder must be poured out carefully, as the dust cloud rises strongly. And it is better to protect the respiratory tract by tying the area of the mouth and nose with a scarf.
Molds
Molds for gypsum figures are easiest to buy in creative stores; the only drawback of such a product is the price. Many find a way out of this situation and successfully use silicone bases intended for baking. You can use all handy items, such as baby containers for playing in the sand, or cut a rubber toy in half. And if you show ingenuity and imagination, then it is quite possible to come up with your own options, again, from what is in the house. Usually these are plastic bottles.
How to make gypsum figurines?
Gypsum mushrooms are the most common guests on personal plots. This is because they fit perfectly into any style of garden design. For the elements in the form of hats, you can take any dish that is suitable in size, and for the legs – plastic bottles. In this case, the gypsum should be used thick. To make the stem of the mushroom hollow, a smaller mold is inserted into the main container and the mixture is poured between them. Plastic bottles are pre-lubricated with thick liquid soap. Parts should be removed from the mold with a knife.
You can try to make gypsum garden figures with your own hands without using a mold. If you sculpt something simple and paint it beautifully, such sculptures look very cute. For example, to make a caterpillar, you only need to form several balls and connect them to each other. Then paint it brightly and set it on a pebble.
With a construction helmet as a mold, you can create an amazingly bright and large ladybug.
Step-by-step instruction
If you approach the manufacture of gypsum sculptures professionally, then the molds should still be used in production. Earlier, household craftsmen cast complex gypsum parts using two bases. The soft silicone was placed in a housing of a hard material, in particular gypsum. The process consisted of several successive steps described below:
- According to the old method, the solution was prepared less often. First, the powder was poured into the water, pressed for 10 minutes and then it was stirred.
- The filling was carried out in moderation, without overfilling the mold, after which the solution was distributed with the fingers into the curved base. The liquid mixture obediently fills all, even small, recesses.
- The movements with the hands in the mold had to be performed several times to let the air bubbles and excess solution come out. The mixture that flowed out of the curved container was sent back with a spatula.
- The next step is vibration. The edges of the soft mold had to be taken with your fingers and tucked in a little. It was thus necessary to walk around the entire circumference of the base and let the remaining bubbles escape.
- Then the jute was spread over the surface of the solution and evenly distributed with the hands. This is a special material made of wood on looms, which is a fine mesh. It served as reinforcement. With its presence, the products did not crack and were preserved for many years. Instead, you can use the usual plumbing tow. To ensure that the reinforcing object gets into the mortar, you need to drive it with a spatula and run the tool several times along the surface in different directions.
- Then the remaining plaster of Paris was slightly beaten by hand and poured on top of the total mass, filling the remaining space in the mold. Then the solution was well smoothed with a spatula, it was allowed to dry for 3-4 minutes. When the surface became dull, it was necessary to make a cut again with the same tool.
Interesting ideas
Let’s see what else you can make from gypsum. In the garden, of course, various animals find their place. As you can see, the biggest challenge in this process is coming up with a suitable mold. If there is still large rubber or plastic toys in the house, then they simply serve as a base for garden animals.
But what if you already have a composition with the presence of gypsum mushrooms? In this case, a hedgehog is missing. This idea looks especially natural against the background of an autumn garden.
A squirrel can sit on a large cut stump. Against the greenery, the composition looks lively and very successful. You can lay some acorns on the surface of the stump.
Closer to the house, it would be nice to arrange the flower bed in the form of a wide wicker basket with twigs and place a pig in the middle.
Another interesting solution is a rabbit with a basket in its hands. It is better to install such a figure on the lawn or just make a green lawn for it.
Openwork ball of ropes
Ball of braided rope
Openwork rope ball. Dip a thick rope in the cement. You can tear old things into strips and sew the ends together. Wrap them on a large balloon, wait until the composition hardens and burst the balloon.
Gnomes from gypsum
Gnomes guard the dacha tree
Gypsum is a very comfortable material, it is strong, durable and water-repellent. The paint fits perfectly on it. It is a pleasure to work with such raw materials.
So the first thing you need to do is go to a hardware store and buy the right casting mold. Silicone ones are the most suitable. We will analyze the step-by-step instructions using the example of a gypsum gnome, but you are free to sculpt any other character.
- If you plan to make a large statue more than 1 m high, you must make a metal frame. It is better not to disturb and create a low figure up to 0.7 m. In this way it becomes lighter in weight, can be lifted, rearranged, put in the garage for the winter
- Dilute the composition with water exactly according to the instructions on the gypsum package. The mass is well mixed to a homogeneous pasty consistency. For the elasticity of the material, PVA glue is poured there. About 10 g/kg of dry gypsum
- Now fill half the volume of the mold with the ready-made mortar and let it set. Then fill the container to the top. Tap gently on the sides to let the air out
- The mold is removed only after the gnome is completely dry. Give him at least two days
- The painting stage comes. First treat the entire surface with a primer. Then you can apply colored paints and after they are dry, varnish for better preservation of the colors.
Cement gnomes
Cement gnomes
Here we will tell you how to make a gnome without buying a special silicone mold.
What you need:
- Solution
- Metal pin
- Ropes
- Nylon stocking
Stages of work:
- Pour cement into the stocking and insert an iron rod there for stability.
- Select the area of the nose with your hands and twist the rope there. It should turn out to be a round ball
- Make round legs, by analogy with how the spout is made
- Under the nose, stick a piece of thin cloth, previously dipped in cement, folded in half. It will be a beard
- Pull the stocking over the pole, fix it and hang the end to the side to make a sharp cap with a tassel
- When the structure is completely dry, it is covered with a cement-gypsum mixture. This makes the paint better and brighter on the surface.
- Color your new country dweller
It is necessary to work with gloves on the cement mixture. Make sure it does not come into contact with the eyes or mucous membranes. In case of contact, immediately rinse the area with plenty of running water.
The need for painting
Despite the fact that gypsum is a self-sufficient material in terms of color scheme, it is better to paint them to protect outdoor sculptures from mechanical damage and climatic factors. The glossy surface also looks more aesthetically attractive and decorative. Gypsum garden figures that are unpainted quickly become dirty. Dust eats into the pores and folds of products, they get a gray tint and lose their original appearance. To ensure that the paint is well absorbed, you should cover the figures immediately after they are completely dry. Products should be sanded and then covered with a layer of primer with high adhesive properties.
Which compounds to use for decorating figures
Of course, for gypsum garden figures you should choose outdoor products that are well applied to this material. A suitable primer is TICIANA. The concentrated acrylic-based product is evenly distributed over the porous surface. As for paints, you can choose Astex AKRY-FLEKX. It is developed on a water emulsion and is intended for facades. It contains substances that protect surfaces against the appearance of mosses and lichens, which is important for outdoor sculptures. Of the transparent paints, Landhausfarbe OSMO is considered good; it is specially produced for processing wood and gypsum bases.
Protective treatment of the product
The optimal temperature for drying gypsum products is 16-25 degrees. Sculptures made by casting should be removed from the molds after they are completely cured. At this stage, you can sand the irregularities with a brush or a wet sponge. If the shape of the gypsum suits you completely, let them dry completely for a while. The next phase is preparing the figures for painting. Apply a special primer in several layers to the entire surface of the product. You can replace it with PVA glue diluted with water. If you have made a sculpture that will stand on the street, you can treat it with linseed oil or shellac for extra protection.
Major mistakes
When making gypsum products, the following common mistakes should be avoided:
- Pouring water into gypsum. You will get a lumpy solution, unsuitable for further work.
- Creation of large gypsum figures without a reinforcing frame. The greater the weight of the mold, the greater the chance that it will break.
- Mixing a lot of gypsum at once. Keep in mind that gypsum tends to harden very quickly, so it is recommended to knead it in parts.
Useful tips
Take into account all the rules for working with gypsum and the sequence of technological steps. Very often, problems arise when working with this simple material when the technology for manufacturing sculptures is violated. Make sure you dry the products thoroughly after removing them from the mold and only then proceed with their further design. Try different molds to make sculptures. All small figurines, children’s toys and household items are suitable as samples for their manufacture. In the described technique at home, you can make casts of hands. Making sculptures from gypsum is an interesting and accessible form of creativity for everyone!
